Versions of this DVD that I am aware of:

1st 2nd 3rd
  1. The “original skull cover” version
  2. The “winged-deadite special edition” version
  3. The “winged-deadite limited edition” version
(note the presence of “Limited Edition” at the top of the cover)
It looks like I've got the “winged-deadite special edition” version. (Another thing I just noticed:  My version has three red stars + “Roger Ebert” in the middle of the trapdoor; the pictures of the other version don't.) It doesn't have DTS, but 5.1 audio is great, too. And it's in widescreen, so I'm happy. (I don't know if the limited edtion has DTS, but I am not going to shell out more money for movie that I already have.)

Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, the Sequel to the Ultimate Experience In Grueling Terror, is gory, but not nearly as much as the Evil Dead. In some scenes, the blood isn't even red. And there's actually a lot of dark humor you can easily laugh about. (It's fun watching Bruce Campbell scream like an idiot.) Spot the Three Stooges refrences if you can.
Many people think Evil Dead II is a remake of the Evil Dead, because you see Ash and his girlfriend drive up to the cabin without the other three people from the first movie, but it's not; Sam Raimi couldn't get the rights to use footage from the first film, so he reshot enough footage to recap. Maybe five minutes into the movie, Evil Dead II continues right where the Evil Dead ended.
The Plot:  In the Evil Dead, Ash and four of his friends awoke an evil force in the woods when they found “the Book of the Dead” in a secluded cabin. One by one, they fell victom to the Evil Dead, until Ash alone managed to defeat them. Or so he thought.
It's now day 2 of Ash's hellish torment, and he still can't manage to escape the woods. So he barricades himself in the cabin and tries to maintain his sanity, despite hallucinations and the possession of his hand.
Meanwhile, the daughter of the archeologist who had originally brought the Book of the Dead to the cabin to study it, arrives to bring additional pages from the book to her father. She and her companions are soon trapped with Ash and must join the fight to save their souls. The only thing that can save them is an incantation from the pages she brought.

My Score:  10/10
